Chennai's Madras Christian College has unveiled a smart device in the form of a duck to monitor the water quality of a lake situated within its expansive 300-acre campus in Tambaram. This IoT-enabled, remote-controlled duck is equipped to traverse the lake, collecting real-time data on seven crucial parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and pH. The lake, a significant water source within the campus, underwent desilting by Bisleri International Limited as part of their CSR initiative, with additional funds allocated for the development of a prototype to test water quality. A team from MCC-MRF Innovation Park crafted the 3D-printed duck outfitted with sensors and an accompanying app for data reception and analysis. Principal of Madras Christian College, Paul Wilson, underscores the importance of leveraging this data for informed decision-making in lake conservation to safeguard the campus's ecological balance and wildlife. The smart duck, conceptualized by Wilson, serves as an early warning system, signaling any adverse changes in water quality that may indicate contamination, prompting proactive intervention measures. Founder of startup KOLOZEN, Kousik, highlights the duck's self-sustaining features through integrated solar panels, ensuring continuous operation even in periods without sunlight. The startup has been successfully collecting and transmitting data for the past two weeks. Researchers envision extending similar monitoring ducks to other water bodies beyond the campus grounds to enhance water quality surveillance and data collection for local authorities. Professor T Pradeep from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Madras emphasizes the potential significance of this data in understanding the dynamics of water bodies during various climatic conditions and ecological implications. The verdant scrub jungle within the MCC campus provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, and the smart duck initiative signals a promising step towards sustainable environmental stewardship.Meras were placed in their eyes to assist the college in monitoring the movements of wild animals on campus.
